Providing Health Information to the Nation

Welcome to The North Carolina Health Information Training Institute's website! The discussion of coder shortages is being held in every corner of the country. There is an evolution of the coding position and not so much as a personnel shortage.

The HIM field is transforming annually with technology, regulations and expectations. Correct coding can keep an organization in business by ensuring proper and timely reimbursement. Ongoing education of current coding staff and the ability to attract new recruits with proper skill sets is an important investment, with the advent of new medical procedures and devices the new codes and reimbursement regulations soon follow.

"I am currently employed as a Program Analyst and entered the coding certification program at DTCC last May as a segue way into retirement. Nina was my instructor for Coding I and II, and Medical Billing and Insurance and I am currently attending the Boot Camp class in which she is the instructor. I was very excited about taking Coding I and II from Nina because I had been told by some of her former students that she was the best person to go to for those courses. Having never worked in the medical or insurance arenas before, I was looking for someone who was passionate about what they were doing and who was going to give me the tools that I needed to succeed in this area. Nina filled both bills. Having worked in the field for a number of years Nina brings a lot of practical knowledge to her class. Her classes were interesting and fun but she made us WORK. We never left her class without a ton of homework but the repetition from the homework assignments has helped me tremendously in becoming familiar with the medical terms and codes which were Greek to me when I began the program."
